5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits the Province of Sulawesi in Indonesia

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Sulawesi province, with its epicenter located 131 kilometers from Melonguane at a depth of 144 kilometers.

Jakarta, December 10, 2024 – A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi province earlier today, shaking the region and raising concerns among residents. According to the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located 131 kilometers northeast of Melonguane, a town in the northern part of Sulawesi. The quake occurred at a considerable depth of 144 kilometers below the Earth's surface, which typically mitigates some of its impact on the surface.

The tremor was felt across various parts of the province, though, at this stage, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage to infrastructure. Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation to assess any potential aftershocks or further developments. The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is also on alert, ready to respond should there be any emerging risks or challenges.

The region's residents are no strangers to seismic activity, as Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Local authorities have emphasized the importance of being prepared for such events and have reminded communities to follow safety protocols in the aftermath of the earthquake.

At present, the focus remains on gathering more information and ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected communities. Both national and local authorities are working together to provide any necessary assistance and are urging residents to stay informed through official channels.
