JEDDAH March 30, 2025: Experiencing Ramadan in Saudi Arabia offers non-Muslims a unique cultural insight into Islamic traditions.
Brazilian teacher Talita Schneider Pereira, who moved to Riyadh in 2023, has found inspiration in the welcoming community. Reflecting on her second Ramadan in the Kingdom, Pereira shared: “Although I don’t fast due to my different faith and background, I see this month as a time for reflection and spiritual connection.”
Originally from Sao Lourenco do Sul, Brazil, Pereira moved to Spain at 27 to pursue a master’s degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Before coming to Saudi Arabia, she had already learned about Ramadan through Spain’s significant Muslim community.
“I understand Ramadan as a sacred month for Muslims, centered on fasting, prayer, and strengthening one’s relationship with Allah. While it brings changes to daily routines, I embrace the experience and adapt to the country’s rhythms,” she said.
This year, Pereira chose to wear the hijab at work as a way to connect with her students and colleagues.
“It’s wonderful to see my students’ excitement when they share their Ramadan traditions. Even though I’m not Muslim, hearing the call to prayer inspires me to engage in my own spiritual conversations,” she added.
Describing the transformation of Riyadh at night, she noted: “The city comes alive—the lights, the bustling streets, and the late-night shopping create a completely different atmosphere.”
As a teacher, her biggest challenge is refraining from drinking water during classes out of respect for her fasting students. “It’s not forbidden, but I choose not to. Though it can be uncomfortable, it’s a small sacrifice compared to the beauty of this season,” she said.
Despite her short time in the Kingdom, Pereira cherishes the warmth and hospitality she has experienced. She fondly recalled a surprise birthday celebration arranged by her Arabic department colleagues, which deeply moved her.
Looking ahead, she hopes to try fasting in the future, believing it to be a valuable experience both spiritually and physically.
