A Colorado School of Mines delegation examines King Saud University's mining research initiatives.

A delegation from the Colorado School of Mines visited King Saud University (KSU) to explore the Sheikh Abdullah Alrushaid Chair for Earth Science Remote Sensing Research, focusing on advanced technologies like remote sensing, AI, and machine learning in mining and Earth sciences.

Riyadh, January 20, 2025 – A delegation from the prestigious Colorado School of Mines recently visited King Saud University (KSU) to explore the cutting-edge research initiatives spearheaded by the Sheikh Abdullah Alrushaid Chair for Earth Science Remote Sensing Research. The delegation was warmly received by Dr. Fahad Alshehri, Director of the Chair, who provided an in-depth overview of the chair’s significant scientific contributions to Earth sciences and mining research. The chair employs state-of-the-art technologies such as remote sensing data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning to drive innovation in these fields.


During the visit, Dr. Alshehri emphasized the importance of mining to Saudi Arabia’s national economy, particularly in light of the country’s ambitious goals outlined in Saudi Vision 2030. He highlighted how mining plays a pivotal role in the Kingdom's broader economic diversification strategy, positioning it as a vital sector for future growth. Dr. Alshehri also showcased the chair’s achievements, including its groundbreaking research and the impactful publications that have helped shape the discourse on mining and Earth sciences in the region.


The discussions between KSU and the Colorado School of Mines culminated in an agreement to collaborate on future research projects, with a focus on mining innovations and the application of advanced technologies. Both institutions recognized the potential of their partnership in advancing knowledge and innovation in mining practices. As part of this collaboration, the two sides also agreed to organize specialized workshops that will bring together experts from the Colorado School of Mines and their Saudi counterparts. These workshops are designed to enhance the skills of Saudi students, researchers, and industry specialists, fostering a robust exchange of ideas and expertise.


The collaboration is expected to create a strong foundation for further developing Saudi Arabia’s capabilities in the mining sector, empowering the next generation of Saudi scientists and engineers with the tools and knowledge necessary to excel in this critical industry.
