New York, August 05, 2023, Dr. Mohammed bin Yahya Al Sayel, who holds the esteemed positions of President of the General Commission for Survey and Geospatial Information and Chairman of the Arab Committee of United Nations Experts for Geospatial Information Management, engaged in a meeting with Kyoung-Soo Eom, the distinguished head of the UN Geographic Information Systems Unit. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 13th meeting of the UN Committee of Experts for Geospatial Information Management, where experts convened to discuss matters pertaining to geospatial information management.
The two aforementioned methods of collaboration between the governing body and the designated entity responsible for creating and furnishing maps for the United Nations' humanitarian endeavors were deliberated upon.
Al-Sayel delivered a concise overview of the UN Center of Excellence for the Environment's initiative to incubate geospatial information. This included a discussion on the objectives and strategy employed by the center. On the other hand, Eom provided an elaborate elucidation on the extent of the responsibilities undertaken by his unit. Specifically, he delved into the methodologies employed to gather geospatial information, which is subsequently utilized in the production of maps for the UN's humanitarian endeavors.
The parties involved have reached a mutual understanding to engage in the sharing of data and pinpoint areas of collaboration with the aim of bolstering the assistance provided by the UN Geographic Information Systems Unit for the authority's project focused on nurturing geospatial information. Additionally, they aim to contribute towards the establishment of the UN Global Center for the Incubating Environment, which will be hosted in Riyadh.
