Jeddah, March 24, 2025, The Nassif House Museum welcomes visitors to Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad) this Ramadan 2025 for an immersive journey through significant archaeological discoveries, including the renowned Al-Shona site, which has evolved over centuries from the late 15th century to the 20th century.
Situated in the heart of Al-Balad, Al-Shona stands as one of Jeddah’s most prominent heritage landmarks, drawing history enthusiasts with its deep-rooted traditions and rich past. Over time, the site has undergone notable transformations in both size and function, enhancing its historical significance.
Throughout much of the 20th century, Al-Shona functioned as a merchant warehouse, storing imported goods from around the world. According to the Jeddah Historic District Program under the Ministry of Culture, historical records and museum tour guides indicate that during the 19th century, the site was smaller, comprising interconnected buildings in its northern section. At the time, it served as a government storage facility for grains, timber, ammunition, and various supplies.
With entrances on Qabel and Gold streets, Al-Shona now offers visitors a rich cultural experience, embodying the essence of the past and showcasing Al-Balad’s historical transformations. As a vibrant cultural and historical hub, the site continues to attract visitors during Ramadan, reinforcing Jeddah’s reputation as a leading tourist and cultural destination.
