April 5, 2025 – Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the visit by Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
The Kingdom “reaffirms its condemnation of the ongoing Israeli attacks on the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” the Saudi foreign ministry stated.
Ben-Gvir visited the site, which holds significance for both Jews and Muslims, in occupied East Jerusalem, after returning to the Israeli government last month amidst the renewed war against Hamas in Gaza. He had resigned from the cabinet in January over the ceasefire agreement in Palestinian territories.
The Saudi foreign ministry also denounced an Israeli attack on a UN building in Jabalia refugee camp on Wednesday, which Gaza’s civil defense agency reported killed 19 people, including nine children.
“The Kingdom condemns these continuing Israeli violations of international law and humanitarian law, urging the international community to stop Israel’s actions, which disregard humanitarian values, laws, and international norms.”
Since the formation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government at the end of 2022, Ben-Gvir has visited the Al-Aqsa compound multiple times, sparking international outrage.
The site is Islam’s third-holiest and an emblem of Palestinian national identity. Known to Jews as the Temple Mount, it is Judaism’s holiest site, revered as the location of the second temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.
Under Israel’s maintained status quo, which has occupied East Jerusalem and the Old City since 1967, Jews and other non-Muslims may visit the compound during designated hours but are prohibited from praying there or displaying religious symbols.
In recent years, increasing numbers of Jewish ultranationalists have broken these rules, including Ben Gvir, who openly prayed at the site in 2023 and 2024.
