An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 rocks northern Zimbabwe.

Earthquake Details: A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Kariba, northern Zimbabwe, on December 23, 2024, with its epicenter located 17 kilometers southeast of the city at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Harare, December 23, 2024 – A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Kariba in northern Zimbabwe today, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 10:30 AM local time, had its epicenter located roughly 17 kilometers southeast of Kariba, at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface.

The tremor, felt across the region, prompted immediate concerns among residents, but fortunately, as of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage. Local authorities and emergency response teams are closely monitoring the situation, although initial assessments indicate that the earthquake’s impact may have been minimal.

Kariba, a city known for its proximity to the Kariba Dam, which forms part of the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is a key hub in the northern part of the country. The surrounding area is also known for its rich wildlife and popular tourist attractions. The quake occurred in a seismically active region, but the depth and magnitude of this particular event appear to have mitigated the potential for widespread destruction.

While the earthquake’s effects have been contained so far, officials are urging residents to remain alert, as aftershocks are sometimes common following significant seismic events. The Zimbabwean government, along with local authorities, will continue to assess the situation in the coming hours to ensure that any further risks are quickly addressed.

The region has experienced minor seismic activity in the past, but a quake of this magnitude is still considered unusual for the area. Earthquakes of this scale, although relatively rare in Zimbabwe, are not unheard of, and the country’s preparedness for such events has been a topic of ongoing discussion, particularly due to the potential risks posed to infrastructure like the Kariba Dam.

As the situation develops, updates from both local officials and international monitoring agencies will be closely followed to provide further details. For now, residents are advised to stay informed and follow safety guidelines provided by authorities to ensure their continued safety.
