Aoun is congratulated by the GCC Secretary-General for winning the Lebanese presidential election.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as President of Lebanon, expressing hopes for his success in fulfilling the aspirations of the Lebanese people for stability and development.

Riyadh, January 10, 2025 – Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Lebanese Republic. In his message, Albudaiwi expressed his sincere wishes for President Aoun’s success in leading Lebanon towards fulfilling the aspirations of its people for stability, prosperity, and development. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the longstanding and historic relations between Lebanon and the GCC.


Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC's unwavering support for Lebanon, emphasizing the commitment of the Council to stand by the Lebanese people in their pursuit of peace and progress. He reiterated the positions outlined in the final statement issued during the 46th Extraordinary Meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council, which underlined the collective backing of the GCC for Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and stability. The Secretary-General specifically highlighted the critical importance of supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces, which play a vital role in safeguarding Lebanon's borders and maintaining internal security.


Further underscoring the GCC’s support for Lebanon, Albudaiwi called for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to restore lasting security and stability in Lebanon. He stressed that this resolution is pivotal in ensuring respect for Lebanon's territorial integrity and maintaining its political independence within its internationally recognized borders. Albudaiwi emphasized the necessity of the Lebanese government exercising full control over all Lebanese territories, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and adhering to the Taif Agreement. This agreement, which played a central role in ending Lebanon's civil war, remains a cornerstone for ensuring Lebanon’s unity and political stability.


Albudaiwi's statement reflects the GCC's steadfast commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and the collective responsibility of the regional community to support Lebanon in achieving a secure and prosperous future. The GCC’s continued support for Lebanon is a vital component of regional stability, and the Council remains dedicated to working with Lebanon to address the challenges it faces and to help it navigate the path towards long-term peace and prosperity.
