Arab Group at UN endorses Algeria's draft for Gaza ceasefire

Washington, February 20, 2024, The Arab Group at the United Nations has officially endorsed a draft resolution put forth by Algeria to the UN Security Council, urging for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In an official statement, the group expressed unwavering support for the resolution presented by Algeria and strongly urged all Security Council members to vote in favor of it.

The Arab Group emphasized that the draft resolution is in line with their priorities as well as the broader international community's concerns. The statement underscored the critical need for an immediate ceasefire, the delivery of humanitarian aid, and a firm stance against forced displacement.

Despite the efforts made by Egyptian authorities to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, the group noted that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating due to the restrictions imposed by Israel, in contravention of resolutions 2712 and 2720.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the Arab Group stressed the imperative for the Security Council to take immediate action in response to the demands of the international community and global public opinion. The group called for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized that, as the primary guardian of international peace and security, the Security Council must make a decisive decision before it becomes too late. This reflects the group's commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis and advocating for peace in the region.
