LONDON March 27, 2025: Arsenal completed a remarkable comeback with a 3-0 win over Real Madrid, securing a 3-2 aggregate victory to reach the Women’s Champions League semifinals, thanks to two goals from Alessia Russo and one from Mariona Caldentey.
Russo pulled Arsenal back into the tie after a 2-0 loss in the first leg, scoring twice in 13 minutes, with Caldentey’s goal leveling the tie. Russo’s acrobatic finish gave them a lead, which proved to be the winner. Arsenal almost added more but was denied by a VAR call and Madrid goalkeeper Misa. A crucial save by Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar, in stoppage time kept Madrid from sending the match to extra time.
Arsenal will face Lyon in the semifinals, who secured their place after defeating Bayern Munich 4-1 in the second leg, winning 6-1 on aggregate.
Lyon advances
Kadidiatou Diani starred with one goal and two assists as Lyon outclassed Bayern Munich 4-1 in their quarterfinal second leg. Lyon reached their 13th semifinal with a 6-1 aggregate victory, with Diani helping set up goals for Melchie Dumornay and Tabitha Chawinga, who both had scored in Munich last week.
Bayern’s defensive errors undermined their comeback hopes. In other upcoming quarterfinals, Barcelona leads Wolfsburg 4-1, and Chelsea faces Manchester City needing goals after a 2-0 loss in the first leg.
