Asia shares mixed; Japan's Nikkei 225 hits all-time high

Bangkok, February 22, 2024, Shares in Asia showed a mixed trend on Thursday, as reported by the AP. Notably, Japan's Nikkei 225 share benchmark experienced a significant surge, reaching an all-time high and surpassing its previous record set in December 1989. By early afternoon, it had risen by 1.9% to 38,997.23, driven by substantial buying activity from global investors.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng faced a slight decline, falling by 0.3% to 16,452.34, and the Shanghai Composite index registered a modest 0.1% increase, reaching 2,952.76. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 showed a marginal decrease of 0.1% at 7,598.00, while the Kospi in Seoul recorded a 0.2% gain, reaching 2,659.21.

In commodities trading, U.S. benchmark crude oil observed a modest increase of 8 cents, reaching $77.99 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, also rose by 6 cents, reaching $83.09 per barrel.

As for currency exchange rates, the U.S. dollar was trading at 150.32 Japanese yen, slightly up from the previous rate of 150.04 yen. The euro remained nearly unchanged at $1.0827.
