In the energy market, benchmark U.S. crude gained 69 cents, reaching $73.39 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude also increased by 57 cents, reaching $78.82 a barrel.
Regarding currency trading, the U.S. dollar strengthened against the Japanese yen, rising to 143.77 yen from 143.29 yen. The euro also showed a slight increase, costing $1.0931, up from $1.0922.
