Hong Kong, March 18, 2024, According to the Associated Press, Asian stocks made significant gains on Monday:
- In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index surged by 2.7% to reach 39,740.44.
- Hong Kong's Hang Seng index edged up by 0.1% to 16,775.55, while the Shanghai Composite index in China rose by 1% to 3,084.93.
- Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index saw a modest increase of 0.1% to 7,675.80, and South Korea's Kospi index advanced by 0.7% to 2,685.84.
- In India, the Sensex index gained 0.2%, while in Bangkok, Thailand, the SET index was up by 0.3%.
In commodities trading, US benchmark crude oil saw an increase of 56 cents, reaching $81.60 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the international standard, also gained 53 cents to reach $85.87 per barrel.
Regarding currency exchange rates, the US dollar strengthened against the Japanese yen, rising to 149.17 yen from 149.03 yen. Meanwhile, the euro also experienced a slight increase, costing $1.0894 compared to $1.0887 previously.
