Farmers in the Asir Region have successfully rejuvenated traditional coffee farms in recent years, thanks to substantial government support for this agricultural endeavor. In Al-Majardah Governorate, northwest Asir, farmers at an altitude exceeding 1,350 meters have taken the lead in revitalizing dormant coffee farms.
Ali Al-Shehri, a farm owner, shared in an interview with the Saudi Press Agency that a decade ago, he and locals initiated the rehabilitation of coffee farms. They ensured water supply by collecting rainwater in traditional reservoirs and constructing concrete tanks for storage. Each mountain farm now boasts over 150 seedlings, yielding an annual coffee production ranging between 300 to 500 kilograms.
The Asir Region Coffee Association, a private association dedicated to coffee cultivation, focuses on awareness, cultivation methods, and marketing partnerships. Their goal is to establish Asir as a central hub for all coffee industry stakeholders.
According to the Aseer Development Authority's website, the region hosts 20,823 coffee trees, producing 250 tons of green coffee and 83 tons of dry-processed coffee. Aligned with the association's strategy, the region aims to reach a coffee production target of 800 tons by 2025, achieved through cultivating 200,000 trees on 200 farms.
The association's comprehensive strategy involves an integrated action plan to enhance sustainable coffee farming's capacity and potential. It covers initiatives related to empowerment, development, agricultural and economic growth, and the sustainability of coffee production.
