April 1, 2025: Robert Lewandowski extended his league-leading goal tally with two second-half goals.
Lewandowski has netted nine goals in his last nine league appearances, bringing his total to 25 goals in the competition, three ahead of Kylian Mbappé from Madrid.
“For me, the most important thing is how I can help the team,” Lewandowski said. “I know that scoring two goals helps the team. As a striker, confidence is key when the ball comes to me.”
Barcelona took the lead with an own goal by Girona’s Ladislav Krejci in the first half, and Ferran Torres sealed the victory with a fourth goal late in the match at Montjuic Stadium.
On Saturday, Madrid had leveled on points with Barcelona after a 3-2 win over Leganes, while third-placed Atletico Madrid fell nine points behind with a 1-1 draw at Espanyol.
This marked Barcelona’s sixth consecutive win and their 11th in the last 12 matches. Hansi Flick’s team remains unbeaten in 20 games this year, with their last loss coming against Atletico in December.
“We are in great form and creating many chances when we have the ball. What I take from today is how we responded after halftime,” Flick said. “The great thing about my team is that we always aim to score, and everyone loves to see that.”
Barcelona has scored four or more goals in 20 of their 45 matches this season across all competitions.
“When you score four times, it means you played a great match,” Lewandowski said. “We’ve been scoring a lot, and it’s important that we stay patient and stick to our game plan when we can’t score early.”
Flick praised the “special” Polish striker.
“Lewandowski is crucial,” Flick said. “I don’t like to single out players, but he’s exceptional in the box.”
Arnaut Danjuma scored for Girona early in the second half, but they remain winless in seven consecutive matches, staying in 13th place.
Barcelona’s Raphinha rested on the bench after his South American World Cup qualifying duties with Brazil.
Barcelona will face Atletico in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals on Wednesday, after a 4-4 draw in the first leg.
