BERLIN, April 2, 2025: Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller may be nearing the end of his illustrious career, as reports suggest the club will not extend his contract, which expires in June.

The 35-year-old Müller, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, is reportedly not being offered a renewal due to Bayern's preference to save his significant wages, according to media outlets SportBild and Kicker.

Müller made his Bayern debut in 2008 under Jürgen Klinsmann, and his breakthrough came the following season under Louis van Gaal. He has since become the club’s most-capped player, with 742 appearances across all competitions, scoring 247 goals, including in Super Cups and club World Championships.

He has won an impressive 12 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues, and he could add to that tally as Bayern currently leads the Bundesliga by six points with seven matches remaining and faces Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals, with Munich set to host the final in May.

Although he brings immense experience and intelligence to the squad, Müller’s playing time has been reduced this season. Of his 23 Bundesliga appearances, 15 were off the bench, and in the Champions League, he has made only three starts from 10 appearances, often playing just a few minutes in the final stages of games. For example, last weekend, he entered in the 85th minute against St. Pauli, and in the 87th minute against Stuttgart the month before.

According to SportBild, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl informed Müller’s representatives two weeks ago that the club had decided not to renew his contract, in contrast to recent renewals for teammates Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala, and Joshua Kimmich.

Müller had reportedly hoped to continue for another season. However, Bayern may offer him a short contract extension to allow him to play in the inaugural Club World Cup in the United States this summer, although he is likely to finish with 13 Bundesliga titles.

Müller retired from international football after the European Championship last year, having earned 131 caps for Germany, where he wore the No. 13 shirt, which he considered his lucky number.
