Bentley Motors achieved its third-best year in 2023, with global sales reaching 13,560 luxury cars. While this marked an 11% decrease from the record-breaking sales of 2022, the results were noteworthy, considering challenging market conditions. The year 2022 had been Bentley's best-ever result.
Despite the slight decline in overall sales, interest in luxury personalization reached new heights. Approximately three-quarters of customers went beyond the 46 billion different configurations available from the standard options range to add bespoke content from Bentley’s Mulliner division. This represented a 43% increase over 2022, indicating a growing desire for truly unique exclusivity in the luxury industry.
Customers also showed a preference for higher-revenue models such as Azure, S, and Speed, accounting for 70% of the sales mix, up from 30% in 2022. The Bentayga Extended Wheelbase exceeded expectations, representing more than a third of the company’s SUV orders in its first full year on sale.
Bentley's range of hybrid vehicles remained popular, with the UK leading the market as one in four Flying Spur and Bentayga customers chose the hybrid option.
In terms of regional performance, challenging market conditions persisted, with positive growth observed in the Asia Pacific (5% up) and the Middle East, India, and Africa (2% up). However, key markets such as China and the UK experienced an 18% decline.
The trend for SUV purchases continued, with the Bentayga remaining Bentley’s top model, accounting for 44% of total sales. The Continental GT and GT Convertible, along with the Flying Spur, also maintained their appeal.
The Americas retained its position as the biggest-selling global market, and interestingly, the UK became the top-selling region for hybrid models by proportion, with 27% of sales in 2023 being hybrid options.
Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors, expressed optimism for the year ahead, citing robust global demand, high levels of interest in hybrid models, and plans for further expansion in 2024.
