BMW M70 xDrive, all-electric performance variant, tops BMW 7 Series

BMW M positions an all-electric performance variant at the top of the new BMW 7 Series model range with the BMW i7 M70 xDrive. In the whole BMW Group product line, it is the most potent all-electric car. The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive offers the ideal blend of electric mobility and performance, providing a driving experience that is unmatched in the luxury segment. It has an electric motor on both the front and rear axles, which together produce a maximum system output of 485 kW (660 hp). The quickest all-electric BMW vehicle is the top-of-the-line 7 Series, which goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. 250 km/h is the electronically capped top speed.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive sets a new benchmark for all-electric vehicle performance within the BMW Group, and it also represents a significant step forward for BMW M GmbH in its transition to electric mobility. The all-electric luxury car is already the third performance vehicle in the lineup. In China, from April 18 to April 27, 2023, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive will make its debut at the Auto Shanghai international auto exhibition. The second half of 2023 will see the start of the global market's launch.

The most powerful BMW electric motor

The performance and economy of the BMW i7's fifth-generation eDrive technologies are constantly being improved. The front and rear axles of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive have highly integrated drive units, and the gearbox, power electronics, and electric motor are all housed in a single, incredibly small body.

The electric motor of the BMW i7 M60 may attain an unheard-of power density thanks to the M-specific design of the current-excited synchronous machine principle, notably in the case of the rear motor. It is currently the most potent BMW electric motor, measuring 2.41 kW/kg.

The BMW Group invented a device that replaces the standard three excitation coils in the stator of the electric motor with six, which allowed for this new performance record. Due to its light weight and compact form, the electric machine is able to constantly produce extremely high power up to high speed ranges. It is undoubtedly more effective and has a higher power density than a drive system that uses two motors on the back axle.

Maximum power delivery with M Sport Boost and M Launch Control

The highest power of the motor driving the rear axle is 360 kW (489 hp). With a system torque of 1,015 Nm in Sport Mode and as high as 1,100 Nm when M Launch Control and the M Sport Boost feature are engaged, an electric all-wheel drive system is produced by finely controlled interaction with the 190 kW/258 hp electric motor on the front axle. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive produces exceptional pulling power in this way.

Drive torque control and traction control are both integrated into the engine control unit for the M Launch Control function. This guarantees that the electric motors' power is accurately managed, allowing it to be transformed into spectacular performance without losing traction.

High long-distance capability, new MAX RANGE function

The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive combines exceptional long-distance capabilities with extremely dynamic performance. The high-voltage battery, which is housed in the underbody of the car, gives the BMW i7 M70 xDrive a range of 488 to 560 kilometers, according to the results of the WLTP test cycle. It has a usable energy content of 101.7 kWh. By deliberately limiting the driving power and top speed, together with eliminating comfort features, the range can be improved by about 15 to 25 percent when using the new MAX RANGE option.

With an output of up to 22 kW for alternating current and up to 195 kW for direct current, the sophisticated charging software of the Combined Charging Unit increases efficiency and speed when charging the high-voltage storage unit. With this, stopping at a high-power charging station can extend the range by up to 170 kilometers (WLTP) in just 10 minutes.

M specific suspension technology optimises dynamics and comfort

All control systems for the electric all-wheel drive, steering, shock absorbers, and driving dynamics systems are applied specifically for M vehicles, which offers the ideal environment for combining the renowned M dynamics, agility, and precise response with a high level of long-distance comfort. The adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-leveling and electronically controlled shock absorbers with M-specific hydraulics are among the standard suspension features of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive.

As part of the standard equipment, the Executive Drive Pro suspension package, which includes Active Roll Stabilization and Active Roll Comfort, is also included. An M sports braking system and 21-inch M light alloy wheels are also included in the package.

Individual aura signals superior performance

The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive stands apart from the other models in the series thanks to unique design cues and signature M design elements that are focused on the mechanical needs of a distinctively sporty driving style. At first glance, its highly distinctive aura announces exceptional dynamic performance and divulges its full force.

The dual circular headlights and BMW radiator grille, which are brand-typical features, are reinterpreted in the front design. The contour line lighting for the BMW radiator grille emphasizes the front's stunning presence even further. On the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, it is combined for the first time with a radiator grille surround in high-gloss black in conjunction with the optional M Performance Package.
