CST, ITU Sign Cooperation Agreement on Hosting NTN Global Events

Saudi Arabia’s Global Role: Saudi Arabia, a member of ITU since 1949 and holding a seat on its Council, strengthens its position as a leader in the telecom and space sectors, building on its successful hosting of the Connecting the World from the Skies Global Forum in 2022.
CST and ITU Agreement: The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) of Saudi Arabia signed a cooperation agreement with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to organize global events focused on non-terrestrial networks (NTN), aiming to enhance telecom services and bridge connectivity gaps in remote areas.

Riyadh, November 26, 2024 – In a significant step toward advancing global communication technologies, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) of Saudi Arabia has signed a landmark cooperation agreement with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on the organization of global events focused on non-terrestrial networks (NTN). The agreement was formalized by Eng. Mohammad AlJanoobi, Deputy Governor of the Radio Spectrum Sector at CST, and Mario Maniewicz, Director of the Radiocommunication Bureau at ITU, on the sidelines of the prestigious Connecting the World from the Skies Global Forum 2024.

This collaboration aims to bolster efforts between CST and ITU in hosting international events that center on NTN, a rapidly growing area of telecommunications that promises to revolutionize connectivity around the world. As the demand for innovative telecom services rises, NTNs—such as satellite, high-altitude platform stations (HAPS), and other space-based technologies—are becoming increasingly vital for bridging communication gaps, especially in remote and underserved regions.

The agreement is set to promote the development of cutting-edge technologies that can connect remote areas, deliver sustainable solutions for global communication infrastructure, and pave the way for future innovations in NTN. It underscores a shared commitment between Saudi Arabia and ITU to advance research and innovation in this sector while ensuring the future of communication is sustainable and eco-friendly. This partnership will play a key role in addressing the growing need for connectivity in the most difficult-to-reach places, ultimately fostering global inclusivity and enhancing technological access for underserved populations.

In line with its strategic vision, Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen its position as a global hub for technology and innovation, particularly in the fields of space and telecommunications. The signing of this agreement comes at a time when the Kingdom has already demonstrated its leadership on the international stage by hosting the first Connecting the World from the Skies Global Forum in 2022. This event, set to be held biennially, serves as a platform to bring together thought leaders, innovators, and policymakers from around the world to address challenges and opportunities in the telecom and space sectors.

As a member of the ITU since 1949, Saudi Arabia has been deeply involved in shaping global telecommunication policies and practices. The Kingdom’s longstanding presence on the ITU Council, where it has held a seat since 1965, reflects its commitment to advancing international cooperation in telecommunications and information technology. The ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations, works with member states to develop global policies, standards, and technical solutions that facilitate the growth and sustainability of telecommunication infrastructures worldwide.

This new partnership between CST and ITU is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the digital realm and its unwavering commitment to advancing the global telecommunications landscape. The Kingdom is positioning itself at the forefront of the NTN revolution, aligning with global efforts to foster connectivity, drive technological advancements, and ensure equitable access to communication services across the globe. Through this collaboration, Saudi Arabia continues to play an instrumental role in bridging the digital divide, empowering communities, and shaping the future of global communication.
