Dar Unaizah for Traditional Folklore Preserves Saudi Heritage

Unaizah, October 13, 2024 – Folk arts serve as a vibrant window into Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage, embodying the diverse social interactions and behaviors that have shaped the Kingdom over centuries. Through poems, chants, and meaningful expressions rooted in authenticity, these artistic forms capture the deep pride and connection of the Saudi people to their history and Arab heritage.

Folk traditions in Saudi Arabia have deep roots, having been lovingly passed down through generations. This oral and performative legacy has resulted in a colorful tapestry of artistic expressions, with distinct dances and chants that vary from one region to another, reflecting local customs and narratives. Among the institutions dedicated to preserving this cultural wealth is Dar Unaizah for Traditional Folklore, which has been a prominent force in folk arts for over 50 years. Officially registered in 1410 AH, the group specializes in various forms of traditional music and dance, including Samri, Najdi art, and Saudi Ardah. Their participation in festivals across the Kingdom showcases the richness of Saudi heritage and contributes to its revitalization.

One of Unaizah's most celebrated folk art styles is Samri Unaizah, a captivating performance characterized by two rows of participants facing each other. In this dynamic presentation, a poet begins reciting a poem, with the words echoed by those in the row where the poet stands. This call-and-response format fosters a lively interaction between performers, creating an immersive experience for both participants and onlookers. Another popular folk dance is the Hawti, which similarly features two facing rows that repeat the poet's verses while dancers elegantly weave between them, adding rhythm and energy to the performance.

The dedication of Dar Unaizah for Traditional Folklore to preserving and promoting Saudi heritage extends beyond mere performance. The organization actively seeks to revitalize Saudi art and culture at all levels, engaging communities and encouraging a deeper appreciation for traditional practices. By fostering a sense of pride in their cultural identity, they play a vital role in ensuring that these cherished traditions continue to thrive in contemporary society.

As Saudi Arabia navigates the complexities of modernity, the preservation of folk arts remains a crucial endeavor, allowing the Kingdom to honor its past while inspiring future generations. Through initiatives like those led by Dar Unaizah, the richness of Saudi cultural heritage is celebrated and sustained, ensuring that the voices of the past continue to resonate in the present.
