Diriyah Biennale Foundation inaugurates second edition with "After Rain" theme

Diriyah, February 20, 2024, On Monday, the Diriyah Biennale Foundation marked the inauguration of the second edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, held under the theme "After Rain." The exhibition, curated by Ute Meta Bauer, the artistic director of the biennale, showcases a diverse array of artworks from both Saudi and international artists.

Running until May 24 in the JAX district of Diriyah, the exhibition spans 12,900 square meters across six indoor and outdoor halls and courtyards. 100 artists, including 30 from Gulf countries, present 177 artworks. The pieces culminate artistic research inspired by the curatorial team's journeys throughout Saudi Arabia, fostering a creative dialogue across different generations.

This biennale edition brings together artists from varied backgrounds and cultures, exploring the intricate relationship between humans and nature. The works engage with the surrounding environment and delve into fundamental human needs such as water, food, and medical care. Additionally, they narrate the evolving history of a country undergoing rapid development and change, offering a rich multi-sensory experience.

Supporting 47 new artists for this edition, the Diriyah Biennale Foundation collaborated with prominent figures such as Jumana Emil Abboud, Sara Abdu, Mohammad AlFaraj, Azra Akšamija, Tarek Atoui, Rachaporn Chochoy, Vikram Divesha, Christine Fenzl, Anne Holtrop, Armin Linke, Ahmed Mater, Njokobok, and Camille Zakharia.

In addition to the art exhibition, the event features meetings, dialogues among artists, workshops, film screenings, and research-based artworks. The activities, initiated in April under the title "Biennale Meetings Series," will extend over a year. The interactive "Learning Garden" online platform will continue to showcase ideas presented at the biennale even after its conclusion.

Aya Al-Bakree, CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, emphasized that the second edition syncs with the Kingdom's renaissance and developmental transformation, particularly in the arts sector. She described the event as a cultural experience fostering contemplation and reflection, resonating with visitors of all cultures and ages. Al-Bakree commended the depth of research conducted by Meta Bauer, adding creativity and vitality to the biennale.
