Diriyah Biennale Foundation launches first session in Jeddah

The Diriyah Biennale Foundation, which oversees the Biennale of Islamic Arts, begins its first session in Jeddah. The Western Pilgrims Hall at Jeddah International Airport served as the venue. This occurred between January 23 and April 23, 2023 AD, and was comparable to the cultural dynamism that Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian capital, experienced in the previous year 2022 with the festivities and activities that preceded the inaugural Diriyah Biennale for Contemporary Art.

The Biennale of Islamic Arts' events are being held in The Bride of the Red Sea, where art enthusiasts are invited to attend. The first is known as "The First House and Gate to the Two Holiest Cities for Muslims"—Mecca and Al Medina. The Biennale of Islamic Arts aims to connect the past, present, and future in an unprecedented way by celebrating Islamic art and heritage and to be a link that enriches cultural and artistic exchange between the Kingdom and various world civilizations. It will reflect the historical richness of those sacred sites as well as the diversity of their cultural heritage.

The successful collaboration between Abdul Latif Jameel and the Biennale Foundation on this occasion was praised by Youssef Hussein, Head of Lexus Marketing Operation in Lexus KSA. This partnership reflects the company's desire to improve the societal, artistic, and cultural aspects of the Kingdom. The Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah, which will highlight Islamic arts through cutting-edge, contemporary works by local and international artists and creators and which falls under the quality of life initiatives in the Kingdom's Vision 2030, according to Youssef Hussein, is continuing a successful partnership that was started last year with the Diriyah Biennale in Riyadh. It is also regarded as a top creative platform. It increases public knowledge of the vibrant cultural scene in the Kingdom.

Awwal Bayt (First House) was the topic of the Biennale. The theme will look at how the Ka'bah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah give Muslims all across the world a sense of belonging to their own homes (bayt). There will be an interior portion and an outdoor portion of the Islamic Arts Biennale. The Sacred Direction (qiblah) will be the subject of the inside installations, while the Hijrah (migration) will be the subject of the outdoor installments.

The purpose of the event is to showcase Islamic culture's artistic and creative expression, both historically and currently. It also seeks to emphasize a fusion of heritage and modernity.

The schedule for the Islamic Arts Biennale 2023 was just released. 44 artists, including Iranian-born Shahpour Pouyan, Egyptian artist Huda Lutfi, and Saudi artists Ahmed Mater and Sultan Bin Fahd, will take part in the event.

Since the Ka'bah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah served as the primary inspiration for the Islamic Arts Biennale 2023, works on loan from some of the most esteemed national and international institutions that have supported the Islamic Arts will be included.

A wide range of foreign curators and academics, including those from the Smithsonian in London and Washington, DC, will curate the first Islamic Arts Biennale. Museum of Victoria and Albert

The area will have a 70,000-square-meter venue that was developed just for it, with amenities like exhibition spaces, a theater, a mosque, workshops, classrooms used for programming, as well as shopping and restaurants.

Dr. Saad Al-Rashed, a renowned Saudi archaeologist; Dr. Omnia Abdel-Bar, a researcher at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; Dr. Julian Rabe, a former director of the National Museum of Asian Art of the "Smithsonian Institution" in Washington; and Soumaya Vali, co-founder of the architecture and experimental research firm Counter Space, are also on the team of curators overseeing the Biennial of Islamic Arts' activities.
