April 4, 2025: A second-half header from Enzo Fernandez gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Tottenham in a fierce Premier League derby on Thursday, lifting Chelsea into the Champions League qualification spots.
Fernandez scored in the 50th minute, heading in Cole Palmer’s cross at Stamford Bridge. The win moved Chelsea into fourth place, above Newcastle and Manchester City, with eight rounds remaining in the Premier League.
While the match was far from a classic, it was chaotic, featuring 10 yellow cards and a melee, as well as two disallowed goals following video reviews. Moises Caicedo had a goal ruled out for offside, and Tottenham’s Pape Sarr saw a long-range effort disallowed due to a foul on Caicedo.
Tottenham's Son Heung-min had a chance saved by Chelsea's Robert Sanchez, and 12 minutes of stoppage time followed. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with the win, saying the team needs to win “in a dirty way” to become successful.
Tottenham remains in 14th place, and their focus is now on the Europa League after reaching the quarterfinals. The result puts further pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, who faced criticism for his substitutions. Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson made his return after a two-month injury absence.
