Cairo, March 11, 2025 – Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit engaged in a constructive telephone conversation on Monday with European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The discussion primarily focused on strengthening Arab-European cooperation, with a particular emphasis on the evolving situation in the Gaza Strip and the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Aboul Gheit and Kallas exchanged views on recent developments in Gaza, underscoring the importance of international collaboration to support the region’s stability and recovery. Aboul Gheit specifically highlighted the critical role of the European Union in backing the Arab plan for Gaza's early recovery and reconstruction. This plan, which was adopted at the recent extraordinary Arab summit held in Cairo, aims to provide comprehensive support to Gaza's reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of prolonged conflict and devastation.
In his remarks, Aboul Gheit stressed that the EU’s continued support is essential for the successful implementation of the recovery plan, emphasizing the need for the creation of favorable political and security conditions that would enable effective execution. He pointed out that the plan outlines a broad framework for rebuilding Gaza’s infrastructure, restoring essential services, and providing humanitarian aid, all of which require strong international cooperation and a coordinated approach from global actors.
The Arab League Secretary-General also stressed the importance of a long-term, sustainable approach to rebuilding Gaza, which includes not only physical infrastructure but also efforts to address the underlying political and social challenges facing the region. He reaffirmed that the Arab world is committed to working closely with international partners, including the EU, to ensure that Gaza’s recovery is both comprehensive and enduring.
For her part, Kaja Kallas reiterated the European Union's commitment to supporting the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, noting that the EU has been actively involved in providing humanitarian aid to the region. She expressed the EU's readiness to collaborate with the Arab League and other international stakeholders to help create the necessary conditions for the success of the reconstruction efforts.
The phone call reflects the growing importance of Arab-European cooperation in addressing pressing issues in the Middle East, with both parties acknowledging the need for a united, multilateral approach to resolving the complex challenges facing Gaza and its people. As the situation continues to evolve, the cooperation between the Arab League and the European Union will remain crucial in facilitating long-term peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
