Rafha, October 14, 2024 — As the vibrant hues of autumn begin to paint the landscape, falconers in Rafha Governorate, nestled in the Northern Borders region of Saudi Arabia, are diligently preparing their prized birds for the much-anticipated hunting season. The conclusion of the "Miqyad," a seven-month off-season dedicated to specialized care and rest, marks a significant transition for both falcons and their handlers.
Falah Al-Shammari, an experienced falconer in Rafha, shared insights with a Saudi Press Agency reporter about the critical preparations that unfold during September and early October. These weeks are pivotal for rekindling the falcons' natural instincts and enhancing the bond between the birds and their human companions. “The relationship we build with our falcons is based on trust and understanding,” Al-Shammari explained. “This period allows us to reconnect and ensure they are ready for the challenges ahead.”
Another falconer, Muteb Al-Noman, elaborated on the meticulous process involved in preparing the birds. This includes essential grooming tasks such as trimming the beak and claws, which not only promotes the falcons' health but also enhances their performance during hunts. Additionally, each bird is equipped with a tracking device, a crucial safety measure that enables falconers to monitor their whereabouts and ensure their well-being throughout the hunting season.
The enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming season is palpable, as the National Center for Wildlife officially announced September 1 as the commencement of this year's hunting activities in Saudi Arabia. This announcement has ignited excitement among falconers and enthusiasts alike, as they prepare for a season rich in tradition, skill, and the thrill of the hunt. As temperatures drop and nature transforms, the bond between falconers and their birds is set to flourish, heralding the arrival of a season that honors both heritage and passion.
