Farasan Islands, March 22, 2025 – The Farasan Islands have long celebrated Ramadan with distinctive traditions that blend faith and maritime heritage.
In the past, women meticulously prepared homes by painting walls with intricate engravings, arranging smooth pebbles in courtyards for a coastal ambiance, and renewing household items. Amnah Aqili reminisced about polishing utensils, preparing spices, and weaving palm frond carpets, while the scent of mastic from clay water jugs and coffee husk from traditional pots filled the air. Neighbors strengthened bonds by exchanging Ramadan dishes.
Abkar Al-Mashrai'i recalled how, over 70 years ago, islanders relied on news from Jizan to mark Ramadan’s arrival. Lantern-lit alleys echoed with Quranic recitations, the muezzin’s call announced suhoor, and children played traditional games, preserving cultural heritage.
Today, the Farasan community continues to embrace Ramadan through worship, compassion, and gift-giving, fostering both spiritual and social connections.
