G3 Comet Seen in the Northern Borders Region's Sky

Comet C/2024 G3 (Comet G3/ATLAS) was observed for the first time in Arar, Northern Borders region, on January 17, 2025, despite cloud cover affecting visibility.

Arar, January 18, 2025 – The skies above Arar in the Northern Borders region recently offered a spectacular celestial display as Comet C/2024 G3, known as Comet G3 or Comet ATLAS, made its first appearance visible to the public. This rare event, which marks a significant moment for astronomy enthusiasts in the region, provided a captivating opportunity for stargazers to witness the comet as it traversed the sky.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, Adnan Al-Ramdoun, a member of the Astronomy and Space Club, shared details about the comet’s appearance. Although the visibility was slightly hindered by cloud coverage, the comet was successfully observed in the Northern Borders region on January 17, 2025. Discovered on April 5, 2024, by an observatory of the ATLAS Network in Chile, Comet G3 has already generated considerable excitement among astronomers due to its expected brightness and unique trajectory.

Al-Ramdoun highlighted that Comet G3 is anticipated to be the brightest comet of 2025, with a projected luminosity of negative 3.5 magnitude. This brightness is expected to make it visible to the naked eye in the western sky until January 21, 2025, a rare sight that could linger even after sunset and into the twilight hours. However, what makes this sight even more extraordinary is that the comet will not be visible again for another 160,000 years, adding a sense of urgency for those eager to witness its fleeting appearance.

The comet’s current visibility holds even greater significance as it approaches the sun, where it will face intense solar gravity. This phase of its journey is crucial for scientists, as many comets disintegrate or lose brightness as they encounter such gravitational forces. Worldwide, astronomers are keenly tracking the comet’s evolution to determine whether it can withstand these conditions. If it does, Comet G3 may become even brighter in the coming days, potentially offering even more breathtaking views to stargazers in the region.

This extraordinary event is not just a treat for local observers but also a significant moment in the field of astronomy, as scientists continue to monitor and study this rare cosmic visitor.
