GCC countries committed to fighting terrorism and supporting UN counter-terrorism efforts

New York, September 20, 2023, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi emphasized that GCC countries are eager to combat terrorism, eliminate its funding sources, and support the efforts of the United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism to promote global peace. His remarks came during his meeting with UN Office of Counter-Terrorism Undersecretary General Vladimir Voronkov on the margins of Albudaiwi's participation in the meetings of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York City. During the meeting, several topics were discussed, including an assessment of the GCC's efforts to combat terrorism and an emphasis on the close cooperation between the GCC, the international community, and the United Nations to limit the activities of extremist and terrorist organizations. Also discussed were methods to develop and strengthen joint efforts to confront and combat terrorism.

In the meantime, Vronkov announced that the United Nations, in collaboration with Nigeria, will organize the African Summit on Counter-Terrorism in Abuja, Nigeria, in April of next year. The summit will focus on bolstering regional cooperation, establishing institutions to combat terrorism, and addressing the evolving character of terrorism on the African continent.
