GCC foreign ministers meet in New York to discuss Iraq's developments

New York, September 18, 2023, Following a coordination conference in New York, the Ministerial Council of the Foreign Ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) released the following statement: The GCC foreign ministers were present when the ministerial council met on September 17, 2023, at the Sultanate of Oman's Permanent Delegation to the UN in New York. At the meeting, the council discussed the most recent developments in the Republic of Iraq. The Federal Supreme Court's decision, which was made on Monday, September 4, 2023, and published on Thursday, September 14, 2023, included inaccurate historical details that were taken out of context regarding the agreement that Kuwait and Iraq reached in 2012 regarding the regulation of maritime navigation in Khor Abdullah, and the Ministerial Council urged Iraq to act seriously and urgently to address the negative effects of these developments.

The ministerial council emphasized that these developments contravene international charters, treaties, and agreements, including UN Security Council Resolution 833, and do not advance relations with the GCC nations.
