The meeting, chaired by Kuwait’s Assistant Foreign Minister for GCC Affairs, Ambassador Najib Al-Bader, was part of the Council's continuous efforts to strengthen regional security and stability while addressing the evolving situation in Syria in a way that aligns with the shared interests of the GCC member countries.
Ambassador Al-Bader emphasized that this meeting was held in accordance with the outcomes of the extraordinary Ministerial Council session during its 46th meeting in Kuwait on December 26, 2024. The session underscored the GCC countries’ commitment to closely monitor the situation in Syria and work toward a collective strategy that would contribute to a peaceful resolution and long-term stability in the region. This ongoing collaboration reflects the Gulf states' recognition of the importance of Syria’s stability for the broader security of the Middle East.
The Assistant Foreign Minister further explained that the primary goal of this virtual meeting was to formulate a strategic vision and practical steps for the future that would allow the GCC to play an effective role in supporting Syria's security and stability. This vision aims to facilitate cooperation with both regional and international partners, ensuring that the necessary measures are taken to advance a political solution, promote stability, and address the pressing humanitarian concerns facing the Syrian people.
Several initiatives and measures have already been established as part of the GCC’s broader effort to strengthen its engagement in Syria, focusing on fostering a political solution to the crisis, ensuring regional stability, and improving the humanitarian situation in the country. Ambassador Al-Bader highlighted that this unified approach among the GCC states represents a shared commitment to a strategic framework that will guide their collective involvement in Syria. The meeting reaffirmed that the security and stability of Syria are intrinsically linked to the broader security of the Gulf region and that assisting the Syrian people in realizing their aspirations for peace, stability, and development is of paramount importance for all GCC countries.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Al-Bader stressed the continued importance of coordination between GCC member states as they work toward supporting the Syrian peace process. He affirmed that the GCC’s strategy remains rooted in dialogue and joint action with the international community to ensure long-term security, stability, and prosperity for Syria and the region at large. By aligning their efforts, the GCC countries hope to foster a comprehensive and sustainable solution that will address the multi-faceted challenges faced by Syria, including political, humanitarian, and security concerns.
This meeting underscores the Gulf Cooperation Council's deep commitment to regional stability and its active role in shaping a peaceful future for Syria, a country whose ongoing conflict has had far-reaching consequences across the Middle East. Through continued cooperation and a clear strategic approach, the GCC aims to make meaningful contributions to both the Syrian people’s aspirations and the collective security of the region.
