GCC regrets UN Security Council's Gaza ceasefire resolution failure

New York, February 21, 2024 The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for Arab Countries expressed its disappointment over the UN Security Council's inability to pass a resolution advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza and the safeguarding of civilians.

Spokeswoman for the GCC and Qatari Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Alya Ahmed Saif Al Thani, conveyed the GCC's regret regarding the Security Council's failure to adopt the proposed resolution presented by Algeria, which enjoyed support from the Arab group and the majority of council members. Al Thani emphasized the humanitarian nature of the resolution, asserting its alignment with international humanitarian law.

Al Thani reiterated the commitment of GCC countries to persist in their collaborative endeavors with partners to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This collective effort aims to mitigate the suffering of the Palestinian populace, facilitate the delivery of essential humanitarian aid to Gaza, and safeguard civilians in the region.

The draft resolution unequivocally condemns the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians, reaffirms the obligation of all parties to adhere to international law, and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
