In commemoration of the International Day for Tolerance observed annually on November 16th, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Mohamed Jasem Albudaiwi, has underscored the paramount importance of advancing principles such as dialogue, tolerance, acceptance of diversity, and the rejection of hate speech. Albudaiwi's statements were highlighted in a press release from the GCC General Secretariat.
Addressing the pressing need to foster understanding and respect among diverse communities despite their differences, Albudaiwi called upon the international community to swiftly intervene in response to the grave crimes committed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. He expressed concern over the resulting casualties, displacement, and blatant violations of international laws and norms. Albudaiwi stressed that these actions undermine the core tenets of international humanitarian law, emphasizing the need for the international community to condemn such aggression and take decisive steps to compel Israel to cease these violations and work towards providing international protection for the Palestinian people.
Emphasizing the importance of upholding cultural diversity and respecting differences in customs and cultures worldwide, Albudaiwi asserted that tolerance stands as a fundamental pillar for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. He contended that fostering tolerance is crucial for ensuring peaceful and secure coexistence on a global scale.
Albudaiwi further highlighted the significance of enacting legislation, both domestically and internationally, as well as educational curricula that promote tolerance and counteract extremism rooted in ignorance and fear of the other. He stressed that the world's diverse array of religions, languages, cultures, and sects should not be a source of conflict but rather a necessity for enriching global human thought.
Concluding his remarks, Albudaiwi asserted that international tolerance necessitates ensuring justice, peace, and freedom for people in their homelands without displacement, marginalization, or violations of their freedoms and rights. He called for unity and collaboration within the international community to redouble efforts in eliminating the root causes of wars and conflicts, which he identified as the primary drivers of human rights violations. Albudaiwi added that any denial of living with dignity and basic rights leads to extremism and retaliation, urging a collective commitment to a world where exclusion and deprivation are replaced by justice and shared prosperity.
