Riyadh, November 28, 2024 – In a statement issued today, Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the Lebanese Republic and Israeli occupation forces. Al-Budaiwi expressed hope that this agreement would represent a meaningful step toward stopping the war in Lebanon, ensuring Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, and facilitating the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. He further stressed the importance of this agreement in enabling the safe return of displaced persons to their homes, a key humanitarian concern for Lebanon and the region.

The GCC Secretary-General emphasized that the ceasefire agreement would play a crucial role in protecting innocent lives and in creating the necessary conditions for the implementation of all international resolutions related to Lebanon. He called on all parties to uphold the terms of the agreement, urging them to fully adhere to its provisions in order to contribute to achieving lasting security and stability in the region. In addition, Al-Budaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s unwavering support for Lebanon, highlighting the organization’s firm stances in solidarity with the Lebanese people. This commitment was underscored in the 161st Ministerial Statement of the GCC, which calls for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and reiterates the need for Israel to respect Lebanese borders. The statement also emphasizes the importance of the Lebanese government extending its control over all Lebanese territories, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions and the provisions of the Taif Agreement, which seeks to ensure Lebanon’s sovereignty and political independence.

The Secretary-General’s remarks were a clear reflection of the GCC's continued advocacy for Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and stability. The organization remains steadfast in its support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity and the peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region. By reinforcing its position on Lebanon’s future, the GCC underscores its broader commitment to regional cooperation and international peacebuilding efforts, all while striving for a peaceful and prosperous Middle East.
