Saudi Arabia Concludes Comprehensive Training Program on Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea

Riyadh, October 25, 2024 — A 15-day intensive training program on ocean affairs and the law of the sea concluded in Riyadh, hosted by Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UN DOALOS). The program drew 55 participants from various government entities, aiming to strengthen national expertise in maritime law and ocean governance.

Led by consultants, legal experts, and academics from UN DOALOS, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the program offered a deep dive into the legal and institutional framework governing oceans and seas. Key topics included the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, maritime zone divisions, scientific research protocols, and negotiation and dispute resolution in maritime contexts.

This initiative highlights GEOSA's commitment to developing skilled professionals in oceanic survey and geospatial information through partnerships with universities, specialized institutes, and international organizations, fostering a robust national knowledge base in maritime and geospatial fields.
