Riyadh, October 9, 2024 — The Saudi Heritage Commission has announced the upcoming "Scientific Symposium on Cultural Landscape Research on the Al-Faw Archaeological Area," designed to enhance awareness of this historically significant site. This symposium aims to illuminate the rich historical and archaeological importance of Al-Faw, as well as to showcase ongoing research and excavation projects that have been developed since the time of the late Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Ansary, a pioneering figure in Saudi archaeology.

Recently, the Cultural Landscape of Al-Faw Archaeological Area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi from July 22 to 31. This prestigious recognition marks Al-Faw as the eighth site in Saudi Arabia to be celebrated for its outstanding universal value to humanity, reinforcing the Kingdom's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

The symposium will highlight the contributions of King Saud University to the Al-Faw archaeological area, showcasing the collaborative efforts between the Saudi Heritage Commission and various public, private, and non-profit sectors. This partnership not only emphasizes the significance of academic engagement but also seeks to enhance Saudi Arabia's historical and cultural importance on local, regional, and global scales.

In addition to academic presentations, the symposium aims to enrich the field with innovative archaeological studies, facilitating the exchange of expertise and insights among participants. To further engage attendees, field visits to the Al-Faw area will be organized, allowing speakers and participants to experience the site firsthand.

The event will feature 22 research papers discussing a range of topics, including the origins of the Al-Faw archaeological area and its social and economic history. These papers will be presented in five dedicated sessions, fostering in-depth discussions and knowledge sharing among experts in the field.

Through this symposium, the Saudi Heritage Commission aims to elevate public awareness about the Kingdom’s extensive archaeological heritage, which spans thousands of years. By emphasizing the importance of such initiatives, the commission is dedicated to ensuring that Saudi Arabia's rich cultural landscape continues to be recognized and appreciated both nationally and internationally.
