Brussels, May 11, 2024—In a statement released yesterday, the European Union recognized the outcome of the historic UN General Assembly vote in favor of Palestine's application for UN membership, which was supported by the majority of states.
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said, "Palestine has received unequivocal support to have its permanent observer status enhanced with additional rights and privileges." He also reaffirmed the EU's long-standing commitment to a just and comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the two-state solution.
Borrell continued, "The EU will continue to provide strong support to the Palestinian state-building effort, as well as to strengthen Palestinian institutions and their capacity in anticipation of future statehood."
