Highly Traveled Hijra Road Gets Upgraded by Roads Authority

Riyadh, August 19, 2024 — The Roads General Authority is undertaking a significant road improvement project on Hijra Road, a critical artery connecting Makkah and Madinah. This 524-kilometer stretch is vital for accommodating the large number of pilgrims traveling between these two holy cities, and the project aims to enhance both safety and road quality.


Project Details:


Improvements and Upgrades: The comprehensive project includes several key enhancements:


Resurfacing: The road will be resurfaced to improve driving conditions and overall road quality.


Reflective Markers: New reflective markers will be installed to enhance visibility, especially during low-light conditions.


Rockfall Protection: Measures will be taken to protect against rockfalls, improving safety for travelers by mitigating risks from falling debris.


Progress and Objectives: The project is currently 23% complete. It is part of a broader road sector strategy aimed at improving road safety and quality. The Roads General Authority has set ambitious goals, including:


Reducing Road Fatalities: The target is to reduce road fatalities to below five per 100,000 people by 2030, contributing to a safer driving environment.


Improving Road Quality: The authority aims to achieve a global ranking of sixth in road quality, reflecting a commitment to world-class infrastructure.
