Riyadh, March 5, 2025 – In a significant step towards strengthening efforts to combat human trafficking, the Saudi Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed an agreement to implement the third phase of their joint project aimed at enhancing mechanisms to combat human trafficking in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This renewed agreement seeks to build on the progress made during previous phases while addressing emerging challenges in the ongoing battle against human trafficking.

The agreement outlines a comprehensive program that includes several key initiatives to combat human trafficking and assist its victims. These efforts will focus on supporting the rehabilitation of victims, facilitating their voluntary return and reintegration into their home countries, and developing tools to prevent potential exploitation within supply chains. In addition, the agreement includes national capacity-building programs designed to enhance local capabilities in preventing and addressing human trafficking crimes. The initiative also aims to improve monitoring systems, strengthen data collection processes, and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the joint victim assistance fund, which will provide critical support to those affected by human trafficking.

Dr. Hala bint Mazyed Altuwaijri, the President of the Saudi Human Rights Commission and Chairwoman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, emphasized that the agreement strengthens the Kingdom's national efforts to prioritize the protection and support of victims of human trafficking. She noted that the partnership with international organizations, particularly IOM, plays a pivotal role in unifying response efforts and promoting a comprehensive approach to combating human trafficking. Dr. Altuwaijri also highlighted the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to collaborating with international organizations, demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the global fight against human trafficking and its determination to implement best practices from around the world.

IOM Director-General Amy Pope praised the collaboration between the HRC and the IOM, emphasizing that the third phase of the project represents the close and mutually trusting relationship between the two organizations. Pope acknowledged that the continued partnership highlights both parties' shared commitment to advancing human rights and tackling the complex issue of human trafficking. She stated that the third phase of the project will further strengthen institutional capacities and contribute to the development of policies and frameworks that protect and assist victims of human trafficking.

This ongoing collaboration between the Saudi Human Rights Commission and the International Organization for Migration reflects a unified and multi-faceted approach to tackling one of the world’s most pervasive human rights challenges. As both organizations continue to work together, their efforts will help create a more effective response to human trafficking, enhance support for victims, and ensure that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to be at the forefront of regional and global efforts to eliminate human trafficking in all its forms.
