Rafha, March 27, 2024, The participation of the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority in Saudi Green Initiative Day on March 27 underscores its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. The authority's involvement in raising awareness about environmental issues and nature conservation aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.
By protecting the environment and biodiversity within Saudi Arabia, the authority plays a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges and supporting global efforts to mitigate climate change. Through its official platforms, the authority aims to promote environmental awareness among local communities and encourage participation in environmental initiatives.
The authority's strategic focus includes preserving the natural environment, promoting vegetation cover, engaging communities in environmental awareness activities, and implementing sustainable practices. These efforts contribute to achieving the targets set by the Council of Royal Reserves under the Saudi Green Initiative, such as planting 10 billion trees and protecting 30% of land and marine areas by 2030.
One notable success of the authority's initiatives is the significant expansion of vegetation cover within the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve. Through afforestation projects and seed dispersal, the reserve has witnessed a substantial increase in vegetation cover, leading to benefits such as carbon storage, air purification, desertification prevention, and climate change mitigation.
Academic studies and field research, supported by remote sensing technology and satellite imagery, have provided detailed insights into the growth of vegetation cover within the reserve. The cumulative impact of these efforts has resulted in a remarkable multiplication of the vegetation cover area, reaching approximately 6.7% compared to around 1.5% in 2018. As of 2023, over 593,700 trees have been planted in the reserve.
With its expansive area and rich biodiversity, including rare species like the rhim gazelles, Arabian oryx, and Arabian ostrich, the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve stands as a testament to the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices in preserving natural ecosystems and promoting a greener future for Saudi Arabia and the world.
