King Abdulaziz University (KAU) secured a silver ranking in the inaugural Times Higher Education (THE) Online Learning Rankings for 2024, recognizing its excellence in delivering high-quality online education.

Jeddah, December 20, 2024King Abdulaziz University (KAU) has achieved a prestigious recognition by securing a spot in the silver category in the Times Higher Education (THE) Online Learning Rankings (OLR) for 2024. This marks a significant achievement for KAU as it enters the newly introduced ranking, which evaluates universities across the globe for their excellence in delivering high-quality online learning programs. The 2024 OLR, launched this year, is designed to assess and recognize the institutions that are providing cutting-edge and effective online educational experiences to students worldwide.

The Online Learning Rankings (OLR) categorizes universities into three levels: gold, silver, and bronze. These categories are determined based on a comprehensive assessment of the quality of online learning offered by institutions, gauging their commitment to providing superior educational opportunities through virtual platforms. The ranking is based on a robust set of criteria that focus on four primary pillars—**resources**, engagement, outcomes, and environment—which are further subdivided into a total of 17 metrics designed to evaluate different aspects of online education.

The Resources pillar, accounting for 35% of the overall score, assesses the amount and quality of resources available for online learning, including student support, the faculty-to-student ratio, and professional development opportunities provided to staff. This section reflects how well the university allocates resources to ensure that its online learners receive the tools, support, and expert guidance they need for a successful educational experience.

The Engagement pillar, which makes up 25% of the ranking, measures the level of student involvement in online learning programs. This is gauged through surveys that evaluate aspects such as the quality of teaching, interaction among peers, and student satisfaction with the online learning experience. The ranking considers how well universities engage students, foster a sense of community, and encourage collaborative learning in a digital environment.

Outcomes, representing 15% of the overall score, focuses on the academic progress and success of online students. This includes student progress rates, as well as student recommendations, which highlight how effectively students are achieving their learning goals and how likely they are to endorse their programs to others.

Finally, the Environment pillar, which accounts for 25% of the ranking, evaluates the overall learning environment offered by the institution. This includes the technical support provided to students, the resources available for enhancing the learning experience, and the diversity of both the student body and faculty, ensuring that the institution provides an inclusive and well-rounded online learning environment.

This inaugural edition of the Times Higher Education Online Learning Rankings is a major step forward in recognizing and assessing the quality of online education. For students worldwide, the rankings serve as a valuable tool in selecting institutions that provide top-tier online learning experiences. By classifying universities into gold, silver, and bronze categories, the OLR offers clear guidance on which institutions are leading the way in delivering high-quality, accessible, and effective online education.

For King Abdulaziz University, achieving a silver ranking is not only a testament to the institution’s commitment to advancing online education but also a significant reflection of its role in enhancing the digital transformation of the Kingdom’s educational landscape. As Saudi Arabia continues to invest in Vision 2030, KAU’s recognition in the THE Online Learning Rankings underscores its ambition to provide world-class education in both traditional and digital formats, aligning with national goals of promoting innovation and excellence in higher education.
