Islamic Development Bank Commits $156.3 Million for Cancer Treatment Centers in Turkmenistan
Jeddah, October 25, 2024 — The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has announced a major financing agreement, pledging $156.3 million to support the establishment of three cutting-edge cancer treatment centers across Turkmenistan. This significant move aims to bolster the country’s healthcare system and provide high-quality oncology services to a wide segment of the population.
The agreement was formally signed by IsDB Group Chairman Dr. Mohammed Al Jasser and Chairman of the State Bank of Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rahimberdy Jepbarov. The signing took place on the sidelines of the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG), hosted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. These upcoming facilities, to be located in the cities of Balkanabat, Turkmenabat, and Mary Region, are expected to offer advanced diagnostic and treatment options to nearly 11,750 patients annually, a transformative addition to Turkmenistan’s healthcare landscape.
The IsDB has been a long-standing partner in Turkmenistan’s development journey, providing financing for an array of projects that span various sectors, including energy, healthcare, ICT, transportation, and trade. Over the years, IsDB has facilitated significant projects to improve regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth. This includes key initiatives such as railway and gas pipeline projects, as well as advancements in communications infrastructure aimed at enhancing Turkmenistan’s export capabilities and regional ties.
