Riyadh, March 30, 2025 – The King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) continues its leading role in advancing the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) by executing innovative projects and ambitious initiatives that contribute to achieving the Kingdom's environmental goals and boosting its sustainability.
These efforts are part of the National Laboratory's mission to develop innovative, eco-friendly solutions, protect terrestrial and marine ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and promote environmental sustainability, aligning with the Kingdom's national goals for research, development, and innovation.
KACST has conducted a vegetation survey project as part of its initiative to preserve plant cover and biodiversity. The project involves surveying and evaluating plant cover throughout the Kingdom, collecting samples of soil, plants, and seeds, and analyzing them chemically and physically. During the survey, eight new plant species were recorded in the Saudi flora database.
Additionally, 600 sites, each spanning one square kilometer, were surveyed, contributing to the protection of local vegetation. An atlas of the Kingdom’s plants, featuring 500 species, is also being prepared for publication, which will serve as a scientific reference for researchers and those interested in this area.
These projects reflect the National Laboratory's commitment to supporting Saudi Vision 2030 and national initiatives aimed at fostering a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations.
