KAUST Directs Research toward Aquaculture to Enhance Food Security

By addressing overfishing and environmental challenges, the program seeks to alleviate pressure on marine ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and establish a sustainable, locally driven aquaculture sector in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
KAUST's advancements in aquaculture, particularly in fish nutrition, are projected to save Saudi Arabia up to $417 million annually by 2030, while increasing seafood production from 280,000 to 530,000 tons per year.

Jeddah, November 19, 2024 – The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has intensified its focus on advancing aquaculture through innovative research and development, contributing significantly to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to enhance food security. Recent breakthroughs in fish nutrition, achieved through KAUST-led initiatives, are projected to save the Kingdom up to $417 million annually in production costs by 2030, representing a transformative step toward a more sustainable and economically viable aquaculture sector.

During the Sixth Aquaculture Development Program (ADP) Workshop, hosted by KAUST in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, participants highlighted the program’s ambitious targets. The initiative aims to initially produce 280,000 tons of seafood, with plans to scale production to 530,000 tons annually by 2030. These efforts are designed to establish a robust, sustainable, and locally driven aquaculture sector in Saudi Arabia, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening domestic food production.

A key focus of the program is addressing the high cost of fish feed, which constitutes up to 70% of total production expenses. By optimizing fish nutrition and adopting innovative feed strategies, the program seeks to alleviate the financial burden on producers while enhancing the competitiveness of Saudi aquaculture in global markets. This approach not only reduces dependence on imported fish but also fosters economic growth by creating new employment opportunities, attracting investments, and empowering fishing-dependent communities to achieve self-sufficiency.

The program also addresses pressing environmental concerns, including the overexploitation of natural fish stocks along Saudi Arabia’s coasts. By alleviating pressure on marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable fishing practices, the initiative aims to preserve biodiversity and support long-term ecological balance. These measures reflect Saudi Arabia’s commitment to integrating environmental sustainability with economic development.

Through its groundbreaking research and strategic collaborations, KAUST continues to play a pivotal role in advancing Saudi Arabia’s aquaculture capabilities. The program exemplifies the nation’s dedication to achieving food security, fostering innovation, and ensuring a sustainable future for its marine resources.
