Jeddah, November 06, 2023, The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has inked an agreement with two Chinese companies to embark on a project dedicated to the production of eco-friendly green plastic. This initiative leverages KAUST's proprietary technology based on high-mass aliphatic polycarbonate compounds. The experimental phase of developing this environmentally sustainable plastic is anticipated to span two years before transitioning into full-scale commercial production. Additionally, a specialized facility is slated for construction next year to support the project.
The primary application of this green plastic is slated for the production of biomedical items and food packaging. Notably, these polycarbonate compounds, developed by KAUST, contain up to 45% environmentally friendly carbon dioxide.
The two Chinese companies have expressed their keen interest in introducing KAUST's polycarbonate compounds into the market, with aspirations to achieve an initial production capacity of one ton. Their long-term objective is to expand into comprehensive commercial manufacturing.
