KAUST to Host 2025 'Times Higher Education World Academic Summit,' First in Middle East

Jeddah, October 11, 2024 — In a landmark announcement, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) will host the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit in 2025, marking the first time this prestigious event will take place in the Middle East. This decision not only highlights KAUST's status as a premier hub for scientific research and technological innovation but also acknowledges the significant contributions of Saudi Arabia to the global academic landscape.

KAUST President Edward Byrne expressed his enthusiasm in a press release on Thursday, emphasizing the summit's role in fostering collaboration among academic institutions. "The summit strengthens the cooperative spirit within academia, focusing on making strategic, impactful contributions to global challenges," Byrne stated. He further noted, "Building on the success of this year's event, we will continue the tradition of cultivating collaboration and driving global change." This sentiment underscores KAUST's commitment to positioning itself as a leader in higher education that prioritizes meaningful engagement with pressing global issues.

The significance of this event is amplified by the evolving role of Saudi Arabia in the international academic community. Byrne remarked that this milestone "underscores the rising recognition of the role that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can play in building a future for higher education where universities worldwide understand their potential influence for good." This recognition aligns with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy and enhance the educational sector's global standing.

Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, shared his excitement about the upcoming summit, stating that it will convene leading figures in higher education to tackle some of the industry's most pressing challenges. "Together, the community will explore opportunities for innovation and commercialization, outline strategies to shape the next generation of leaders, and collaborate to make a meaningful impact on lives around the world," Baty said.

The 2025 World Academic Summit promises to be a pivotal event, offering a platform for academic leaders to share insights, forge partnerships, and engage in dialogue about the future of higher education. With KAUST at the helm, the summit is poised to set a new standard for collaboration and innovation in the academic sphere, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s emerging role as a key player in global education and research.
