Al-Sayahid, December 14, 2024 – The King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, one of the Kingdom’s most prominent cultural and heritage events, officially launched camel races today at the King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Al-Sayahid. Held under the theme “Glory to its people,” this year’s festival celebrates the camel’s deep-rooted significance as both a cultural and economic symbol for Saudi Arabia. The festival serves not only as a celebration of the traditional sport but also as a showcase of Saudi heritage, blending competition with cultural appreciation.
The camel races, a central highlight of the festival, are set to run for 20 days and will feature an impressive prize pool exceeding SAR 85 million. A total of 233 races will be held, with 185 taking place in the mornings and 48 in the evenings. The races span an impressive total of 1,335 kilometers, offering both spectators and participants a thrilling experience. The competitions are divided into multiple categories such as Haqqayiq, Lagayya, Jatha'a, Thanaya, and Hail and Zamoul, each offering a unique and challenging race format, making the event one of the most diverse and exhilarating camel racing gatherings in the region.
Among the notable events during the festival is the women’s race, scheduled for December 20 during the evening session. The race, covering a distance of 2 kilometers, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of camel racing in Saudi Arabia. It also reflects the Kingdom's ongoing commitment to empowering women in various sectors, including traditional sports. The inclusion of women in this prestigious event not only highlights their growing role in camel racing but also reinforces the broader societal shift toward gender inclusivity.
