The King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh unveiled a rare collection of 13,000 postage stamps that chronicle contemporary Saudi history, showcasing significant national occasions and events before and after the Kingdom's founding.

Riyadh, October 30, 2024 – The King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh has announced the unveiling of a remarkable collection of postage stamps that chronicles contemporary Saudi history. This extensive collection serves as a visual narrative of the Kingdom’s national occasions and significant events, both prior to and following its founding.


Spanning a vast array of 13,000 stamps, the library's collection features rare specimens that reflect the rich heritage of Saudi Arabia, particularly those issued during the reign of King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founding monarch of the Kingdom. Among these, the oldest stamp dates back to March 1925, providing a tangible link to a pivotal era in Saudi history.


One of the collection's standout pieces commemorates King Abdulaziz's accession to the throne in 1931-1932, a significant event that preceded the unification of the Kingdom on September 23, 1932. This stamp marks a transformative period in the nation's history, representing both a leadership transition and the foundation of a unified state. Notably, the first stamp to bear the name “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” was issued in 1934, featuring several editions printed in various colors that highlighted the Kingdom’s emerging identity.


Throughout King Abdulaziz’s reign, the issuance of stamps was a common practice to commemorate significant national milestones. These included the inauguration of the railway, the visits of esteemed Arab and Islamic leaders, and the introduction of airmail services, each stamp capturing the spirit of progress and connection within the Kingdom and beyond.
