Kishida commits Japan to lead carbon-free Asia, promoting global investments

Ahmed Saleh

Tokyo, December 18, 2023, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has pledged that Japan will "take the lead" in efforts to achieve a carbon-free Asia. Speaking at a multinational forum in Tokyo focused on discussing decarbonization measures, Kishida outlined Japan's commitment to creating a substantial "decarbonization market" capable of attracting global investment to Asia. He emphasized that reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a "common challenge" for the region.

Kishida also mentioned that an estimated 4 quadrillion yen ($28 trillion) will be required for decarbonizing Asia. In response, he promised to establish a new organization to support members of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) in implementing policies necessary to achieve carbon neutrality. This initiative reflects Japan's commitment to playing a leading role in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development in the region.
