KSrelief-Funded 'Back to School' Project in Yemen Supports 13,300 Individuals in 2nd Phase

Aden, October 8, 2024 – The second phase of the "Back to School" project in Yemen, generously funded by Saudi Arabia through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), has successfully provided vital support to 13,300 individuals across the governorates of Hajjah, Abyan, Hadhramout, and Perim Island in Taiz. This initiative is a testament to Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering conducive learning environments for both male and female students in regions facing significant challenges.

Implemented in collaboration with a local civil society organization, the project ran from September 17, 2023, to September 16, 2024, and aims to improve the safety and consistency of the educational process in targeted areas. The initiative encompasses three key activities designed to address the immediate needs of students and their families.

The first major activity involves the establishment of 95 alternative classrooms, which are equipped with essential amenities such as chairs, whiteboards, lighting, and solar-powered fans. These classrooms are crucial in providing a safe and comfortable environment for students to learn, especially in areas where traditional school facilities may be lacking.

The second component of the project focuses on procuring and distributing 1,900 school uniforms and 1,900 school bags filled with essential supplies. This effort not only aids in alleviating the financial burden on families but also promotes a sense of belonging and unity among students as they prepare to return to school.

Additionally, the initiative emphasizes community development by generating job opportunities for low-income families. A group of women has been trained to craft 950 locally made bags, which will be distributed to students at the start of the school year. This aspect of the project not only empowers women but also stimulates local economies, creating a positive ripple effect within the community.

This project is part of a broader series of educational initiatives undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through KSrelief, aimed at improving the educational landscape in Yemen. By addressing both educational and socio-economic challenges, the "Back to School" project exemplifies Saudi Arabia's dedication to enhancing the safety and regularity of the educational process, ensuring that children in Yemen have access to the resources and support they need to succeed academically and thrive in their communities.
