Jeddah, January 17, 2025 – The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has launched a pioneering research study aimed at transforming cement manufacturing techniques in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This first-of-its-kind initiative focuses on developing methods to reduce and capture carbon emissions, positioning the Kingdom’s cement industry as a leader in sustainable practices.
The study, part of KAUST's broader Future Cement Initiative (FCI), targets the cement production process, particularly the calcination of limestone, a crucial step that traditionally requires significant energy input and leads to high carbon emissions. By exploring ways to optimize and innovate within these processes, the research aims to develop strategies that will drastically reduce the carbon footprint of cement production, one of the most energy-intensive industries worldwide.
KAUST's efforts are aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and its ambitious goal to achieve a carbon-neutral economy by 2060. The FCI brings together key stakeholders, including KAUST itself, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, and the National Committee for Cement Companies.
